The Scottish Health Equity Research Unit (SHERU) is an independent research unit, funded by the Health Foundation to provide insight, analysis, and scrutiny on the socio-economic factors driving health inequalities in Scotland.
SHERU is committed to examining key national strategies in housing and employability, alongside wider structural drivers such as income, wealth, and poverty.
Using an evidence-based approach, SHERU assesses government policies and their implementation, identifying how both can be strengthened to reduce health inequalities.
With a focus on prevention and early intervention, SHERU has a particular interest in two groups facing persistent inequalities: families living on low income with young children and men aged 18–44.
Through its work, SHERU supports policymakers and communities with evidence and insights to better understand—and address—the drivers of health inequalities in Scotland, helping to deliver meaningful change.
